For many families in Hugungumai, the local Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) is the first point of contact for essential medical services. Yet over time, the facility deteriorated. Roof leaks damaged ceilings, doors and windows no longer secured properly, damp plaster created unsafe conditions, and patients often waited outside under harsh weather. Recognising the importance of accessible and dignified healthcare, Eso Terra prioritised the renovation of the PHC under its Community Development Agreement.
The refurbishment focused on restoring safety, functionality, and comfort. Damaged roofing sheets and weakened trusses were replaced, ensuring the building is protected from the elements. New ceiling boards, repaired interior walls, fresh plastering, and smoothened floors have transformed the once-worn rooms into bright, clean, and more hygienic spaces. Doors and windows were repaired or replaced to improve security and ventilation, while both interior and exterior surfaces received renewed finishing.

These improvements go beyond aesthetics. They directly impact patient experience and the effectiveness of healthcare delivery. The renovated PHC now offers a welcoming environment where health workers can operate confidently, and families can seek care with dignity.
Upon completion, the facility was formally handed over to the HOD Primary Healthcare Centre, who now oversees daily operations, maintenance, and patient services. With the renewed infrastructure, the clinic is positioned to better serve the community’s everyday health needs.

Eso Terra’s renovation of the Hugungumai PHC demonstrates a practical commitment to strengthening local health systems. By addressing critical infrastructure gaps and improving the quality of care environments, the project reinforces a core belief of the CDA: that every community deserves safe, functional, and respectful public services.
